For nearly a decade, the Mariner Life Program, formerly known as REACH, has been making a significant impact on the lives of Glynn County Schools’ students with special needs. This transformative initiative, in partnership with the College of Coastal Georgia (CCGA), equips students with essential employability skills and offers them a taste of college life.
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, Superintendent Dr. Scott Spence and Interim President Dr. Johnny Evans renewed this partnership by signing a new Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This renewal underscores the program’s ongoing commitment to fostering educational and career development for students aged 18-21 with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities who have completed high school and job readiness training.
Recognized by the Georgia School Board Association as a 2023 Leading Edge Award recipient, the Mariner Life Program has broadened the academic and career horizons of its participants. By integrating classroom instruction with real-world experiences, the program ensures that students are well-prepared to transition from school to the workforce.
Eric Mowbray, Director of Special Education Services and Supports for Glynn County Schools, emphasized the program’s dedication to hands-on learning through career training, social engagement, and academic development.
"We are incredibly fortunate to have a supportive college in our community. This partnership allows our students to immerse themselves in college campus life, engage in social events, and improve their job readiness skills, all of which are crucial for a smooth transition into adulthood," he said.
Since the partnership with CCGA began in 2015, approximately 20 students have graduated from the program and have successfully secured employment within the community. The Mariner Life Program continues to tailor its curriculum and instruction to meet the individualized needs of its students, ensuring they acquire the necessary skills to thrive both in the classroom and beyond.
