During the Regular Meeting in September, Glynn County Schools Police Chief Johnny Davis and Mrs. Senetra Haywood, Executive Director for Student Services, presented the Glynn County Board of Education with an overview of the safety protocols implemented across all school campuses. Key points included:
- School Resource Officers (SROs): Each campus has at least one SRO.
- Central Command Center: A dedicated dispatcher and command center are in place.
- Enhanced Security Measures: Controlled entryways, vestibules, and the Centegix CrisisAlert System.
- Security Drills and Threat Assessments: Regular drills and assessments are conducted.
- STOPit Anonymous Reporting System: Available to all students, staff, families, and community members.
They also clarified the definition of a threat as stated in the Student Handbook and Code of Conduct:
“Any threat through written or verbal language or act which creates a fear of harm and/or conveys a serious expression of intent to harm, or violence without displaying a weapon and without subjecting the victim to actual physical attack (including physical, verbal, or electronic threats but not limited to bomb threats or pulling the fire alarm).”
Following the presentation, the Board of Education unanimously approved the August 2024 minutes and the following consent agenda items:
- July 2024 Financials
- FY25 CTAE Perkins Grant: To support the development and implementation of CTAE-related improvements.
- 21st Century Grants: For students in need of additional academic assistance in grades K-5 at Altama Elementary, Burroughs-Molette Elementary, and Goodyear Elementary, and 6th grade students at Glynn Middle, Jane Macon, Needwood, and Risley Middle schools.
- Brunswick High Football Field House Agreement: With John A. Tuten & Associates, Inc.
- Two Ford Explorer Police Interceptor Vehicles: From Wade Ford of Smyrna, totaling $92,034.
Work Session Update
At the Work Session preceding the regular meeting on September 5, the Board received updates on:
- Flexible Benefits Partnership with America Fidelity: Open enrollment will be from October 15 to November 8, 2024, aligning with the State Health Benefit Plan Open Enrollment. One-on-one counseling will be available.
- 5-Year Strategic Plan: Updates included mandated requirements by state statute or directed state policy – HB 538 (Georgia Early Literacy Act) and SB 48 (Dyslexia Bill) – and shifts in progress status. The strategic plan aligns with Georgia’s Systems of Continuous Improvement Framework as outlined by the Georgia Department of Education.
