GCSS Leads SAT, ACT Scores for Second Year

Glynn County Schools have once again demonstrated their excellence, achieving the highest median scores in both the SAT and ACT for the second year in a row. This accomplishment further solidifies the district’s reputation as a leading educational institution where students grow, lead and excel.

According to the latest SAT results, Glynn County Schools surpassed both national and state averages, with a mean score of 1059 compared to the national mean of 995 and the state mean of 1030. In evidence-based reading and writing (ERW), Georgia students outperformed the national average by 20 points, scoring 527 against the national average of 507. Locally, Glynn County Schools excelled with a composite score of 548, despite a slight decrease of six points from last year.

In mathematics, the school system achieved a composite score of 511, which, although down by seven points from 2023, still exceeded the state and national averages of 503 and 488, respectively. At Brunswick High, 132 students took the SAT, earning a composite score of 988, with 512 in ERW and 476 in math. Meanwhile, 173 Glynn Academy students achieved a mean score of 1113, with 576 in ERW and 537 in math.

For the seventh consecutive year, Georgia public school students outperformed their national counterparts on the SAT.

State School Superintendent Richard Woods praised the dedication of students and staff, stating, “We continue to see Georgia students outpacing the national average on the SAT and ACT. This is a testament to our efforts in investing in students’ academic recovery post-pandemic and creating opportunities in our public schools that prepare every child for life.”

Regarding the ACT, the Class of 2024 achieved a mean composite score of 21.2, matching the state average and surpassing the national average of 19.4. The ACT covers four skill areas: English, Mathematics, Reading, and Science, with an optional writing test that assesses planning and writing skills.

The Georgia Department of Education report highlighted that Brunswick High was slightly below the state and national averages in three subject areas, with no changes in state science scores. In contrast, Glynn Academy exceeded state and national benchmarks in all four subjects.

Superintendent Woods expressed his optimism, saying, “It’s encouraging to see that investing in academic recovery, despite the challenges of the last several years, has paid off for our students and their futures. I congratulate the Class of 2024 and their teachers, parents, and communities who made this possible.”

College Readiness benchmarks on the ACT represent the level of achievement required for students to have a 50% chance of obtaining a B or higher, or about a 75% chance of obtaining a C or higher, in corresponding credit-bearing first-year college courses.
